Best Practices for Multi-Use of Miscanthus Feedstock Production Landscapes

This research is creating a multi-use landscape management tool to determine the best practices for Miscanthus feedstock production landscapes. The team is developing spatiotemporal production functions for biodiversity and ecosystem services economics and will use these functions to create a dynamic modeling tool. By combining empirical data with ecological and economic theories and models, the model will allow stakeholders to visualize and quantify the tradeoffs of Miscanthus expansion compared to other agricultural and biofuel crops; identify the optimal landscape configurations, growing sites, and field sizes for future feedstock production; and obtain estimates of the social and environmental effects of Miscanthus introduction.

Improving Global Computable General Equilibrium Models for Bioenergy Analysis

Global computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling is a widely used tool in the academic community for evaluating both the social and environmental consequences of large scale bioenergy production. The main objective of our project is to review and improve the validity of existing global CGE models for bioenergy impact analysis. In policy modeling generally and CGE modeling in particular, the main intellectual challenge is to improve estimates through better calibration, reliability, and realism. This project responds to the need for a rigorous assessment of existing models that dominate the integrated assessment space, addressing data limitations and methodological uncertainties, particularly in modeling land and water resources and use.
