Assessing the Potential Impact of Insect Pests and Plant Pathogens on Biomass Production of Miscanthus x giganteus and Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)

The program seeks to understand the risks to bioenergy crops posed by pests and pathogens. Little is known of the cause of diseases on new biofuel crops, like Miscanthus and switchgrass. This project's surveys of the pests and pathogens that occur on Miscanthus serve the needs of breeders, agronomists and plant pathologists to develop integrated pest and pathogen management strategies to minimize losses.

BioFuels Research Initiatives and Extension: Synergizing Engagement with Stakeholders

Silvis’s project identified factors associated with growers’ adoption of energy crops and consumers’ use of cellulosic biofuels. The Silvis group assessed growers’ knowledge of the production, marketing, and preferred policy incentives for energy crops; rural and urban consumer perceptions of the usefulness of cellulosic biofuels; potential barriers to the use and production of biofuels; and what information potential growers and consumers of biofuels need.  Silvis’s team disseminated the survey findings to stakeholders and developed connections among stakeholders that will enable them to share information, ideas, and perspectives, thus helping to develop a learning community among consumers, producers, and researchers.
