Structure and Function of PMOs

Investigations into the structure and function of the fungal polysaccharide monooxygenases have been the focus of this project.  Activity assays, sequence and phylogenetic analyses have shown that the majority of fungal PMOs fall into three major groups.  An assessment of the molecular basis of the observed regioselectivity of oxidation has been carried out.  Oxidation regioselectivity and the relationship of it to PMO phylogeny has been a major effort.  We have also developed a searching strategy to identify novel PMOs with activity on additional polymeric substrates.  Through this effort, a PMO has been identified and characterized that acts on starch-related substrates.
